Handmade Acoustic Guitar: Genesis G2s

This is one of my recent Genesis handcrafted steel string guitars featuring Brazilian Rosewood, German spruce, and other exotic woods and materials.

The Design Process

When designing this guitar with my client and friend, he wanted me to create a guitar with a “Wow” factor, but at the same time, one that would retain an element of refinement and richness. It’s on that edge where two different extremes collide that I feel, when balanced properly, something magical happens; so that is what we set our sights on achieving visually. Tonally it was to be powerful and responsive to the lightest touch with clarity, separation, and balance.

The Details

After careful consideration we chose the materials to start bringing out dream into reality. I had been saving some special Snakewood for many years, and decided to use it for the accents such as the fingerboard, bridge, headstock veneers, and back strip for an understated and exotic natural element.

To add some flash to the rich natural color pallet, we decided to add a very thin white mother of pearl purfling around the top and fingerboard and matching falling leaf inlays of the same material.

The graceful falling leaf extends down the fingerboard to the single leaf on the hand carved Snakewood bridge, and the white pearl dots in the Snakewood bridge pins and on the side of the fingerboard add another subtle touch of sparkle and unify the design.

The Woods

The Brazilain rosewood back needed no help from me; it had plenty of its own wow factor built in. For the bindings, I had a small stash of highly flamed Hawaiian Koa that was unusually dark colored and it just happened to have the perfect color to work harmoniously with the rosewood and the Snakewood accents.

The headstock is overlayed with Snakewood on the front and back and has custom hand made tuning machines (also with Snakewood buttons) slightly offset, mirroring the asymmetry of the Genesis body shape.

The guitar is very lightweight and comfortable to hold and play. The gentleman for whom I made this guitar was in a motorcycle accident years ago, and needed the guitar neck to be as comfortable as possible to play, so he could reach the notes with minimal strain on his hands and left wrist. I created a special neck design in both the width and profile to give it maximum comfort and to fit his playing style and needs. The final instrument exceeded both of our expectations and truly is something special we are both proud of and that he can enjoy for many years to come.

    love the looks of the guitar, great workmanship tom like to hear a sound clip if possible. I read your articles and wondering if you could talk about the offset sound hole in the side of the guitar . thanks roy

      Hi Roy, I don’t have a sound clip unfortunately. When I finish each guitar, they are quickly sent to their new home, and there isn’t much time for recording. I’ll work on getting on tape soon.

      The side soundhole is something I need to spend more time explaining here on the site you are definitely right. I go into it in detail in my book/DVD set: The Art Of Lutherie.

      But to boil it down in simplest terms here in the comments, it’s about getting a more powerful, and full voice from the guitar. The thinking is this; why cut a hole right in line with all the tension of the strings?(the traditional spot) If you do, then preventing structural failure becomes your main goal with the top from that point on. I remove the soundhole from the top entirely which increases the vibrating size fo the top drastically,(think about going from a 8″woofer to a 16″ size with your stereo) and at the same time, keeps the top structurally sound. This allows me to focus my design (with structural integrity in mind of course, but) with a far greater emphasis on shaping the tonality and response of the guitar’s voice.

      Most people think all the sound comes out of the soundhole, but in reality a large portion of the sound comes directly off the vibrating face of the guitar (especially the more directional high frequencies). Think about your speakers at home again, does more sound come out of the sound port or off the face of the speaker? See what I mean ? :)

  5. Stumbled upon your work on the Internet, Tom… Beautiful stuff!
    As a guitar maker I respect your creativity in thinking outside the box. I am also one of those people who makes their guitars completely unique from any other. I guess you will agree that it is more than Lutherie, it’s being an artist.
    Anyway, keep up the wonderful work; beautiful stuff!

    I am as curious as Roy. I have seen several of your guitars and they are indeed Beautiful (!), But, I am curious to hear the sound they produce. Moving the soundhole makes sense – giving the top more room for vibration. McPherson moved the position of the soundhole from the traditional center location and it made quite a difference in sound quality.
    My question about moving completely from the top to the side; = As well as changing the sound, would that not also change the projection, from the listener to the player? How would you go about letting the listener also hear the music without the use of a pickup?

    Is the small lid on the headstock, behind the third & fourth string there for truss rod adjustment?
